Fistful of Talent: Attracting Gen Y/X Candidates- Job Portal Style

December 10th, 2008

Fistful of Talent HR Blog

One of HR’s top blogs, Fistful of Talent has posted a review of Standout Jobs and the value we can bring in attracting and converting Gen X and Gen Y job seekers.

Read the review here: Attracting Gen Y/X Candidates - Job Portal Style.

The review hits the nail on the head in terms of the value we’re delivering and always working to improve upon:

My point is, with all the talk about community and so many companies trying hard to project a “young ‘uns welcome here” sign, StandoutJobs offers a tremendous tool at a very small price tag. My bet is that medium sized companies will get the most out of it, as it lends itself nicely to a small HR team being in communication. However, it’s completely useful as a tool for a small business as well, keeping everything web based and easy to access, while allowing a small company to advertise intangibles such as culture and flex time. I am thinking the market for big companies will be as an alternative job site, to capture top shelf talent, the type that knows she shouldn’t have to enter her mother’s maiden name or take a typing test five times to secure a phone interview.

A quick thank you to Maren Hogan for the insightful review, and an extended thank you to Fistful of Talent for writing a great HR blog.

Montreal Gazette Features Standout Jobs

December 5th, 2008

Standout Jobs was featured in the Montreal Gazette in a story titled, Employers can attract top talent through their websites.

The story talks about a few of the lessons we’ve learned since launching Standout Jobs in January 2008, as well as our current go-to-market strategy with channel partners.

There’s a great quote from Annick Vinet, marketing managet at headhunting giant Adecco:

Companies need to consider the expectations of candidates relative to the organization of the company. What are candidates looking for besides a job? We should see not only job offers, but also the adventure they are offering.

I couldn’t agree more.

Interview with Joel Cheesman at Cheezhead

November 3rd, 2008

If you’re in the HR world you read Joel Cheesman’s blog Cheezhead. Regularly updated, opinionated and always interesting…

I recently did an interview with Joel, over the phone, and he wrote a summary post, No More Free Lunch at Standout. I’ve since had to calm the employees down; they thought we were cutting out the occasional free lunch we give them…

In fact, the reference Joel is making is to the fact that our Recruitment Communication Platform is no longer free. The entire interview is recorded and available, and Joel highlights a few key points in his article as well.

Here’s what I told him:

We want to keep improving our distribution offering. For example, helping companies get their jobs into more places. E-mail is an important component now, but how do we improve upon that. Also, what does career site 3.0 look like? How do we improve the relationship between job seeker and employer? Ultimately, we’re going to have to evolve so that our product fits into the ecosystem of HR. You should see a lot of change from us over the next 6 months.

It was cool that Joel made reference to our customer, Ericsson, because I do think it’s a great example of how larger organizations are splintering into smaller groups and being a bit more aggressive and creative with their recruitment efforts.

Joel points out, “Most interesting, although Standout Jobs receives most of its interest from smaller, more nimble employers, at least one large organization is utilizing the solution in a way not expected. Ericson in Ireland has set up a microsite to help draw top talent. This is currently an aside to its corporate career center.”

Standout Jobs Featured on The Talent Buzz

July 28th, 2008

The Talent Buzz
The Talent Buzz is a great blog. Written by Jason Buss, a 10+ year veteran of the HR world, The Talent Buzz goes deep into a number of HR issues. Jason’s done an entire series on career sites and their failings, and ways they should be improved. That’s one of the things that attracted me to the blog from the beginning.

Recently, Standout Jobs was featured on The Talent Buzz.

It’s an interview I completed with Jason about myself as an entrepreneur and the state of career sites in general. We didn’t talk a great deal about Standout Jobs; Jason was curious about my view of career sites in general, where online recruiting is failing, and what can be done about it.

I hope you’ll check out the interview and Jason’s blog.

Standout Jobs Picked as Top 20 Web 2.0 Sites by KPMG and Backbone Magazine

July 18th, 2008

Top 20 Award from KPMG and Backbone MagazineStandout Jobs was recently awarded a Top 20 Web 2.0 award by KPMG and Backbone Magazine. They ranked the top 20 and gave us the #9 spot. Thank you!

Kate Trgovac, one of the judges, called the site a “fantastic product” and added, “It has a great target market, excellent business potential (talent wars are huge; culture is everything) and the implementation and tools are excellent. This is really exceptional.”

The list is great, and includes a number of companies we’re good friends with including Freshbooks, ConceptShare, Octopz, NowPublic, b5media and SmartHippo.

KPMG and Backbone held an open nomination process, and then had a group of judges picking and sorting out the winners. We’d like to thank all the judges for their input. We appreciate the positive feedback … and stay tuned for much more to come in the next few months!

Standout Jobs Featured in the Financial Post

June 3rd, 2008

Financial Post logo
Yesterday, Standout Jobs was featured in the Financial Post:

Playing in the major leagues - Online tool helps smaller firms compete for talent. It’s a good overview of our product, why we built it and how it helps.

I was particularly pleased to see one of our clients - Apption - quoted in the story:

Sam Zaid, Apption Software chief operating officer said the response he has received from his company’s career portal has helped attract high-profile candidates that may have gone to a rival firm such as Google Inc. or Microsoft Corp.

“It would have taken 10 times more time to get a whole slew of features for our career site than if we would have done it ourselves,” he said. “I’d definitely recommend it to any small business that’s looking to brand itself on a major scale.”

Thanks to David George-Cosh for writing the story. I hope you’ll check it out here.

(And if you pick up a copy of the newspaper itself, you’ll be graced with not one … but two pictures of yours truly! I’m smiling in one, and I’m a bit more serious looking in the other.)
