Polk Wins Arbor Award of Excellence

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

Polk Career SitePolk was an early Standout Jobs beta customer. And they also did a case study on the success they’ve seen with the platform, specifically in attracting younger job seekers and saving money on costly recruiters.

And now Polk has won an Arbor Award of Excellence for innovative or best resources in human resources management.

It’s great to see our customers get recognized for their efforts - with our platform and of course beyond, with everything else they do to remain innovative, aggressive and focused on recruitment.

Jay Marshall, Manager of Talent Acquisition at Polk, did an interview with Crain’s about the award win and the use of Standout Jobs, entitled Polk ‘portal’ no ordinary job site.

He notes in the article that the Standout Jobs portal only accounts for a relatively small portion of its 200 or so recent hires, but as it grows, and Jay’s team continues to manage and communicate with the growing applicant and job seeker pool, that’s going to change.

It’s fairly small now, just because we’re in the first six months of using it. Right now I’d say about 20 percent of hires are coming in this way. But that will probably become the main artery by which most talent comes in to our (company).

Here’s the official press release from Polk. And an interesting snippet / description from the release:

R. L. Polk & Co., a global company that specializes in automotive information and marketing solutions. Based in Southfield, R. L Polk & Co. is pioneering new methods of recruiting high tech talent using social media strategies such as chat rooms, Facebook, Twitter and a robust internship program, strategies that enable job candidates, in particular techies from Generations X and Y, to “experience Polk.” Polk has developed a pipeline of qualified candidates and talent pools. Their philosophy is to “Hire slow. Hire tough,” taking two to three months or longer to make the right hire. As a result of Polk’s Recruiting for Results strategy, employee recruitment, retention and satisfaction have increased dramatically. Eighty-six percent of employees surveyed would recommend Polk as a place of employment.

Other winners of the prestigious award include The University of Michigan, NSF International and Comerica.

Congratulations to Jay Marshall and the entire team at Polk for their efforts. It’s great to see companies pushing forward on innovative recruitment marketing strategies, testing new ideas and reaching out to Gen X and Y specifically.

Recruiting Survey Results: Shift Away from Job Boards Ongoing

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

Recruiters Expect Hiring to Increase in Q2-Q3; Social Media Eyed to Source Quality Candidates

More than 450 corporate recruiters signal shift away from job boards and place more emphasis on corporate branding to attract high-value hires.

Montreal | March 11, 2009 — A just completed joint survey of more than 450 corporate recruiters by recruitment software company Standout Jobs and PBP Media revealed that almost half of the companies polled (43 percent) are pulling their spending from Internet job boards and re-directing those resources to better showcase their brand to potential employment candidates. According to the survey, the shift away from job boards is a response to current market conditions, which have made more high-value candidates available to companies looking to capitalize on the market’s turnaround with strategic hires.

While the current market is difficult, optimism still dictates many of the respondents’ near term hiring plans, with more than 30 percent of those polled planning to increase hiring during the second and third quarter of 2009. Adding the fourth quarter brings that number to 41 percent. Referrals are still the most popular avenue for sourcing jobs (108 responses), but the companies polled indicated their web site or career page was the next most valuable vehicle for finding candidates (85 responses). Job boards, while useful for generating a higher volume of resumes, were criticized for not delivering qualified candidates (121 responses), which are seen as the key for surviving the tough current economic climate and building future organizational strength.

“We decided to create this poll to get a sense of how bad or good the market for hiring really was at the organizational level, rather than continuing to rely on media reports which have been overwhelmingly negative,” said Benjamin Yoskovitz, Standout Jobs CEO and founder. “With the help of our poll partner, PBP Media, we asked 450 internal company recruiters a number of questions having to do with their hiring practices and plans for the immediate future. The results showed cautious optimism, with many expecting to start hiring again in the third quarter. We also learned their standards and processes have changed, and now strategic hiring is the name of the game.”

Companies are putting more emphasis on engaging quality talent in an effort to show they’re a ‘great place to work’ for the right candidates. Creating a better fit between employer and employee is seen as a key to hiring success, and employment branding attracts the right type of candidates through more open, regular and interactive communication with applicants. This trend was evident in the poll question “Which recruiting trends do you think could improve your recruiting efforts?” 239 respondents said “social networks,” while 187 respondents indicated candidate relationship management was high on their list of priorities. Next in line was search engine optimization (143) followed by “other” (53), blogs (38), online video (36) and Twitter (15). Companies are clearly interested in re-marketing to job seekers, treating people well and delivering a strong candidate experience.

Even though the companies polled indicated they were increasing their dependence on their sites and social tools to engage candidates, the majority of them had no specific strategies for recruiting Generation X and Y applicants, which have grown up with the web and are more likely than their older colleagues to use it for job hunting, socializing and networking. The question “Are you developing specific strategies to recruit younger (Gen X, Y) job seekers” was answered: No: 190, Eventually: 132, Yes: 85, Unlikely: 43.

Overall, the poll shows companies recognize the need to interact and communicate with candidates where they congregate online. They understand the need to be more open and give people a “sneak peak” inside the organization to ensure the right type of people applicants are presenting themselves. While this does promote the brand, it also “meets candidates halfway” and provides a great experience throughout the recruitment process.

Standout Jobs’ web-based Recruitment Communication Platform allows companies to more efficiently deploy career sites and micro-sites loaded with the web’s latest interactive recruiting tools. Employers seeking specific, high-value talent in what has become an increasingly tight employment market benefit from dynamic career portals that showcase their company’s culture and people–not just open positions–and builds recruitment pipelines by engaging candidates with Web 2.0 tools and a full suite of relationship management features.

Standout Jobs Announces General Availability of its Recruitment Communication Platform

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

Leading Provider of Interactive Career Sites Launches Latest Version of their Platform, Proven by More than 200 Beta Customers

Montreal, October 27, 2008 – Standout Jobs, a leading provider of Web-based tools to power companies’ online recruiting efforts, today announced the general availability of version two of its web-based Recruitment Communication Platform. Previously dubbed “Reception” while in beta, Standout Jobs’ Recruitment Communication Platform boasts many new features and updated functionality proven successful with more than 200 beta customers since the company’s launch at DEMO in January 2008.

Standout Jobs’ Recruitment Communication Platform is a do-it-yourself interactive career site that uses video, blogging, chat and widgets to showcase and brand a company’s culture and team to potential recruits. These social media tools and principles attract and engage high value job candidates based on their talents and cultural fit with the company. The solution includes candidate relationship management features for HR managers to identify, interact with and track candidates. Delivered as an on-demand solution, the Standout Jobs’ Recruitment Communication Platform integrates with existing sites or operates as a stand-alone web site.

Enhancements and new features to the Recruitment Communication Platform include:

  • Full customization – Employers can fully customize the design and user interface of their career site to tightly match the look and feel of their overall brand.
  • Chat – Employers can now chat immediately with job seekers when they arrive at a career site, increasing interactivity and engagement.
  • Improved SEO – Improved search engine optimization (SEO) to make sure employers continue to gain traffic from Google and other major search engines.
  • Streamlined application process – Standout Jobs’ applicant process workflow has been praised by users as delivering only the best, most qualified candidates for open positions. Now the application process has been streamlined to make it easier than ever for only the most qualified candidates to apply.
  • Modular architecture – Although seamless to the user, the Recruitment Communication Platform enjoys an updated, modular architecture to support integration with other top HR products, including applicant tracking systems and job distribution software, thereby protecting an enterprise’s previous HR software investments while allowing them to upgrade to the latest Web 2.0 technologies.
  • Community Correspondence – Email distribution of job postings to an organization’s entire contact list, to make the most of “who you know” for recruiting.

Standout Jobs’ Recruitment Communication Platform also provides:

  • A strong candidate relationship management system. Standout Jobs allows hiring managers to collaborate with others within the hiring company about prospective employees, saving the organization time and money.
  • The ability to market jobs instantly across multiple job boards. Post a job once and Standout Jobs populates multiple job boards, both paid and unpaid, from one central, easy to manage dashboard.
  • “We looked at other offerings, but we really wanted something interactive,” said Jay Marshall, Polk USA’s Manager of Talent Acquisition. “The tools we assessed were fine but would still have left the company with a static site, and we knew early on that static sites turn away potential talent. Standout Jobs lets us brand ourselves to highly desirable Generation X and Y candidates and reach them where they live online. Other solutions aren’t as uniquely designed as Standout Jobs’ for this purpose and the people we’re looking to source have grown up with these technologies. The Recruitment Communication Platform was also the easiest to use and came with the best service and tech support.”

In addition to the release of the new Recruitment Communication Platform, Standout Jobs has launched a channel partner program for other HR vendors looking to bring new, web 2.0 technologies to their solutions. The channel program allows resellers to deliver new strategies and greater interactivity to their HR software products and service offerings. Standout Jobs has signed six resellers to-date, including five major recruitment advertising agencies and a top HR media company. Standout Jobs continues to add new resellers as well.

Standout Jobs’ Recruitment Communication Platform is available immediately. Interested companies and resellers can sign up for a 45-day free trial of the product. Pricing for the full license starts at $249.00 per month with no limits on the number of jobs, candidates or users a company can have.

“Our new Recruitment Communication Platform and the partner program launch represent a huge transformation for Standout Jobs in the short year since we first got off the ground,” said Ben Yoskovitz, co-founder and CEO, Standout Jobs. “Our software has always delivered value to our customers, whether through money saved on recruiters’ fees, time and energy reclaimed by executives tasked with sourcing candidates, or HR professionals looking for specific skill sets in niche communities on the web. We’ve incorporated all the great feedback we’ve received from the HR community, and feel our Recruitment Communication Platform is the best the industry has to offer to meet their needs.”

Standout Jobs Named One of 10 Web 2.0 Companies to Watch

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

The IDC just came out with their report on the 10 Web 2.0 Companies to Watch in Canada. We’re very pleased that Standout Jobs was named one of those companies! Here’s our official press release on it…

Montreal, July 24, 2008 – Standout Jobs, a leading provider of Web-based tools to power companies’ online recruiting efforts, today announced it has been named one of “10 Canadian Web 2.0 Companies to Watch” in a new report issued by leading IT market research and advisory firm, IDC. The study, “10 Canadian Web 2.0 Companies to Watch” (IDC #CA2TIW8), profiles 10 companies IDC believes are worthy of highlighting to the broader industry and have the potential to make an impact in the information and communication technology (ICT) market. IDC provides insight into the solutions, go-to-market strategies, partners, and customers of the profiled vendors. Lessons learned may provide a model for other emerging companies in the Canadian technology marketplace, and help larger vendors and investors identify partnership and investment opportunities.

Standout Jobs offers an employment branding and job marketing platform companies use to reach potential employees and interact with them more effectively. Standout Jobs incorporates the latest social media technologies and principles to attract and engage high value job candidates based on their talents and cultural fit with the company, while providing the employer with a significant point of marketplace differentiation.

Standout Jobs’ platform is provided as a hosted solution; no IT or technical experience required. Smaller companies with limited resources or personnel enjoy a dedicated, interactive career site that can be up on the Web and attracting candidates in just minutes. Standout Jobs is “drag and drop” simple to use, saving time-strapped multi-taskers valuable cycles while presenting potential candidates with a professional look and feel to the company’s brand. Larger enterprises enjoy similar benefits, letting hiring managers company-wide or even at the departmental level update their look to attract high-value, Web-savvy prospects for newly opened positions.

Standout Jobs’ platform provides enterprises of any size two key benefits:

  • Affordable branding opportunities. Organizations can use the solution to develop their employer brand to differentiate themselves and attract candidates who are a good fit with the company.
  • Active Candidate pool speeds up the hiring process. The solution enables organizations to engage with candidates on an ongoing basis, providing a source of prospective employees who are already interested in the organization.

“To succeed in the long term, Web 2.0 companies will need to transition from providing ‘cool’ Web-based solutions that users want to try to ‘critical’ tools they need to have,” says Krista Collins, Analyst, Canadian ICT Innovation and Export at IDC Canada. “The companies featured in IDC’s latest study are positioning themselves to make that transition. Standout Jobs’, with its web-based tools to power online recruiting efforts, provides a way for companies to promote themselves, not just the job openings, and foster ongoing relationships with applicants.”

Other benefits to Standout Jobs include:

  • A strong applicant tracing system. Standout Jobs allows hiring managers to collaborate with others within the hiring company about prospective employees. The candidate tracking and relationship management features keep everyone within the organization up to date on where prospects are in the hiring pipeline and helps to ensure a good fit based on skill sets and company culture.
  • Market jobs instantly across multiple job boards. Post a job once and Standout Jobs does all the “heavy lifting” of posting a company’s openings to multiple job boards, both paid and unpaid, from one central, easy to manage dashboard.

“We’re very excited to have IDC, one of the most respected research and analyst firms in the world, recognize Standout Jobs’ concept and business by listing us as one of its 10 Web 2.0 Companies to Watch,” said Benjamin Yoskovitz, co-founder and CEO, Standout Jobs. “When we started the company we knew there was a better way for employers to attract high-value talent online than static web sites and ads on job boards, and we justified that hunch in just a short period of time. Standout Jobs has accumulated well over 150 customers in North America alone in just a short amount of time. Our customers know that regardless of the economic climate, businesses need to effectively brand and market themselves online to attract great talent and continue to thrive.”

And here’s the entire list - congrats to each of the companies:

Standout Jobs Wins SEOMoz Web 2.0 Award in Employment and Jobs

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

2008 Web 2.0 Awards WinnerA few days ago we received some very cool news — we’ve won an award! Specifically, we’ve won SEOMoz’s Web 2.0 Award in the Employment and Jobs category.

If you’re not familiar with SEOMoz, it’s an extremely popular and well-respected resource led by Rand Fishkin focusing on SEO, social media and social networking. If you’re looking for ways to rank better in search engines, build traffic, links, etc. you should check out SEOMoz.

Their Web 2.0 Awards are given out annually to the best Web 2.0 sites on the Web in a host of categories. They used nominations from people (although we didn’t nominate ourselves), as well as their own research and analysis. And then they use a panel of judges to vote on the best.

They rank the sites on 5 criteria:

  • usability
  • usefulness
  • social aspects
  • UI & design
  • content quality

We ranked 5 out of 5 stars on each, except for social aspects (only 4 out of 5 stars).

And who did we beat out?

Well…everyone else, since we did get 1st place, but the runners-up included CareerBuilder, Monster and Mployd.

As the winner, SEOMoz also did a short interview with me about Standout Jobs.

Although being recognized for being “Web 2.0″ is cool — the most important thing is the criteria SEOMoz uses to judge the sites. We’re trying to build a usable, useful and quality experience for employers and candidates. Being acknowledged for those efforts is great.

I’d like to thank the folks at SEOMoz for giving us the award. Here’s hoping we can continue to impress and improve for the Web 2.0 Awards in 2009!

Standout Jobs Partners with Scribd to Offer iPaper Integration on Resumes

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

A couple weeks ago Trip Adler, co-founder at Scribd (and also a client of ours) came to us and suggested that we use their new technology, iPaper, to allow our customers to view resumes & applications directly in the browser. We took a look at the technology and their API and agreed with Trip — iPaper makes a lot of sense for Standout Jobs.

So today, we’re announcing a partnership with Scribd to integrate iPaper into the applicant tracking system part of our Reception product.

What is iPaper?

Here’s how Scribd describes it: “iPaper is a document format built for the Internet. Like a YouTube video, iPaper documents are Flash widgets which you embed in your existing web pages. PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and many other document formats can all be displayed on the web using iPaper.”

So what does iPaper integration look like in Reception? Here’s a screenshot:

ipaper resume

Three reasons why this is so great:

  1. You can view resumes inside the browser. So you don’t have to download or open up the resumes to look at them.
  2. You can print directly from iPaper. In the toolbar at the top of the document you click the iPaper link and you have the option to print right from there.
  3. You can search through a resume. In the toolbar there’s a search link so you can very quickly search through resumes for relevant keywords, etc.

I think customers will find the iPaper integration saves them time and makes the applicant tracking system easier and more effective, because it makes it so much easier to view resumes. And, if you upload any other attachments, or if candidates send you attachments through the messaging system, iPaper works with those as well, as long as their PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint and text files. All you need to do is click the “View” icon that appears next to a file and it will load the iPaper version of the resume in the browser.

Plus, it’s just plain cool.

To show people how this all works, we’ve produced a very short video tutorial on iPaper integration into Reception. Take a look:

View the video tutorial on iPaper and Reception >>

Reception is currently free. You can sign-up and get started immediately.

by Benjamin Yoskovitz

I’m a bit late with this news, having spent the day at ERE Expo in San Diego, but we did put out a press release about some new functionality in our Candidate Relationship Management Tool. This is an area of the product where we’re adding some good functionality to improve the experience for employers. There are a few areas we’re focusing on:

  1. Helping companies take applicant and candidate tracking out of email;
  2. Improving communication between employers and candidates (always a pain point from the candidate perspective); and,
  3. Improving internal collaboration and communication around resumes, applications and candidates.

We put this press release out along with my attendance and presentation at ERE Expo. And here it is:

MONTREAL, April 1 - ERE EXPO - Standout Jobs has added new applicant tracking features to its employer branding and recruiting product, RECEPTION. These new relationship management tools make it easy for recruiters and HR managers to identify, interact with and track candidates.

With RECEPTION, companies can publish relevant content directly to job candidates, and post job ads to multiple free and paid job boards at the click of a button. New applicant tracking features include:

  • Candidate Sourcing: Improved sourcing through the Talent Scout bookmarklet for finding candidates and researching them online.
  • Employee Reviews of Candidates: Invite employees to review candidates voting and leaving comments to improve collaboration throughout the hiring process.
  • Add Files to Candidates: Associate files to candidates including portfolios, assessment tests, and more.
  • Research Candidates: Quickly gather online information about candidates from Google and social networks, and associate it to their profiles in the Candidate Relationship Management Tool.
  • Improved Usability: The Candidate Relationship Management Tool is the easiest to use on the market. Streamlined features and well-organized interfaces ensure quick adoption for the HR staff and entire team.

Ben Yoskovitz, CEO of Standout Jobs, said: “Businesses can now easily manage candidates through the hiring process without the cost and complexity associated with traditional applicant tracking systems. This is
especially important for smaller companies that need to implement robust recruiting solutions while keeping costs down.”

RECEPTION is a software-as-a-service solution that can be integrated into existing sites or operated as a stand-alone website to power companies’ recruiting efforts. RECEPTION is offered completely for free.

Dan Melinger, Co-Founder of Socialight, said: “Reception helps us manage the candidate funnel much more easily. It’s nice to get applicant tracking out of email, with a tool that’s simple, elegant and priced
right.”
Socialight’s career site, which is powered by Standout Jobs’ RECEPTION, is at http://jobs.socialight.com

With Standout Jobs’ RECEPTION product, CUhire customers can create employment branding and recruiting sites in minutes, with no I.T. support or resources, by visiting http://standoutjobs.com/cuhire.

Standout Jobs’ RECEPTION product is a do-it-yourself interactive career site with social media tools like video, blogging and RSS feeds that make it easy for companies to promote their employment brand and hire the best talent. RECEPTION also includes applicant tracking features that make it easy to identify, interact with and track candidates at the click of a button. RECEPTION is a software-as-a-service solution that can be integrated into existing sites or operated as a stand-alone website to power companies’ recruiting efforts.

Sharon George, Senior Partner at CUhire, said: “We echo Standout Jobs’ philosophy that in order to win the war for talent, companies need a Career Site for candidates that is dynamic, engaging and interactive. You need to open the doors and show off your culture and team. Standout Jobs’ RECEPTION makes it easy for credit unions to compete in a competitive talent market — for free.”

Benjamin Yoskovitz, chief executive officer of Standout Jobs, said: “RECEPTION simplifies the recruiting function so companies can continue to focus on doing what they do best. Credit unions of all sizes can now easily set up Career Sites that engage job candidates with high-quality information, interaction and communication.”

To showcase the ease and effectiveness of setting up a site, CUhire has created its own Career Site at http://creditunionjobs.standoutjobs.com. Other CUhire partners in providing recruiting solutions for credit unions include Back Track Screening, Dot Jobs, Jobster, NEI Global Relocation, Prime Advertising, and The David Group.

RECEPTION features include:

  • Create fully customized career sites and modify the colors, layout and look using drag-and-drop widgets
  • Seamlessly integrate video into job postings and create behind-the-scenes company tours
  • Post to multiple free and paid job boards at the click of a button
  • Bookmark candidates’ information from popular sites including LinkedIn
  • Centrally track, review and collaborate on candidate resumes, interview notes and status
